Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy which utilises hypnosis to treat a number of psychological issues. It has often had success with treating pain during minor surgery, dentistry, childbirth and in cases where a patient is suffering from a terminal illness. It has also been shown to help people to relinquish their addictions, overcome phobias and conquer other psychological problems such as panic attacks, insomnia and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). As hypnotherapy is completely natural, it is an ideal suggestion for people who wish to pursue a form of treatment which requires no drugs or surgery.

How It Works

Hypnotherapy treats mental disorders which cause the sufferer to have physical symptoms. Hypnotherapy occurs in one on one sessions with a trained hypnotherapist who encourages the patient to relax into a trance-like state where the patient’s subconscious mind is more in control. The subconscious parts of the brain are much more instinctive that the conscious parts, and this is the area where many individuals find the root of their psychological issues. During such a relaxed state, the hypnotherapist is able to suggest changes in the patient’s lifestyle and behaviour which often manifest later in the patient’s conscious life. This reprogramming of the subconscious helps the individual to release or alter the beliefs at the heart of their mental disorder, allowing them to heal from it. If it works, the benefits of seeing a professional hypnotherapist may be long lasting or permanent.

There is some debate about the effectiveness of hypnotherapy. Even though the benefits of hypnotherapy can be seen, there is no scientific evidence to explain how or why it works. As of yet it is not certain if the results of hypnotherapy are anything more than the results of the placebo effect.

Pros of Hypnotherapy

One of the things that most attracts people to hypnotherapy is its ability to help with a very wide range of conditions without the use of medication, some of these conditions include:

  • Phobias
  • Confidence issues and social anxieties – E.g. public speaking, relationships, etc.
  • General anxiety and stress

  • Cancer and terminal illnesses – E.g. Cancer Research UK states that most, but not all, patients who opted to try hypnotherapy experienced positive results

As well as the number of problems which can be aided by hypnotherapy, another positive point is that almost everyone is eligible to participate. Although, it should be noted that hypnotherapy has different levels of success with different patients, and that an individual should consider seeking alternative forms of treatment if they suffer from epilepsy. Anyone with a personality disorder or past history of mental health problems should consider seeing a psychiatrist prior to any form of hypnosis.

Cons of Hypnotherapy

There are other factors to consider before making the choice to undergo hypnotherapy. It is not typically available through the NHS, which means that a prospective patient must do the research to locate a private hypnotherapist. In the UK, hypnotherapists are not required to have undergone any professional training and you should always check that the therapist has a recognised qualification and is registered with a national organisation such as the British Society of Hypnotherapy or the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Costs of Hypnotherapy

Most of the conditions which can be helped by hypnotherapy require the patient to return for multiple sessions with the exact number depending on the complexity of the problem. As the costs of hypnotherapy treatment can be anywhere between £50 and £90 per session, it should be kept in mind that the cost has the potential to mount. If you see no results after 8-10 sessions then you should consider cessation of treatment.

As with any type of alternative therapy, you must be realistic about the chances of success. Hypnotherapy is generally regarded to be safe but may be ineffective. Only proceed if you are comfortable with the costs, the qualifications of the practitioner and the risk of side effects.
